I think the show went really good. I shared a lot of scripture about how to adapt the gospel and make it relevant to different cultures (Acts 17 "Mars Hill" discourse). I enjoyed studying this passage in depth to share some insights. I used the free e-sword Bible research tools (mentioned below). All the bible versions and commentaries were very helpful. Dear Brother Bernie,

For crying out loud! Why don't you stop all this petition/research/documentation/web site building work you have been carrying on for the last three years, and simply contact the Networks with your facts about "Pastor Haggee"???!! They just love to do expose' documentaries to expose religious "Elmer Gantrys" who are only in the 'religion business' to get rich. Can there be any doubt left in your commendably charitable Christian mind, that Haggee is 'making merchandise' of his flock?( II Peter 2:3), has been doing so from the beginning, and has absolutely no intention of 'repenting'?
People like so many of these TV "evangelists", so called, need to be exposed and put out of business! He is unworthy of your continued "brotherly" admonitions, because he isn't listening...to you or any of the handful of others who've signed your well intentioned petition. It's a lost cause, Brother. Give it up, and start concentrating your considerable talents on something more productive, like providing a forum for seekers to ask questions about Christianity and the Word of God. Or, simply use your site to publish information like you already are, exposing the Benny Hinns, and Robert Tiltons, Kenneth Copelands, and all the rest who are doing the same thing Haggee & Company are, exploiting the gullible for profit. With all the research you've already done, and all the resources you've developed, you have a big foundation laid to become the 'premier' naughty preacher expose' site on the Internet.
Go for it! I'll be praying that God will guide you to submit to his Divine will, and allow yourself to be led by the Holy Spirit to apply your energies to whatever he directs you to do.

Bernie you are right!! It is important to warn the people of these false teachers because they are giving christianity a bad name and a wrong name...It is not what christianity is about and those that are saved from these minstries or converted are not converted to the saving Christ, but rather converted to a false demonic being at best....

I'm really saddened by this whole thing. At the same time, I'm glad somebody's saying something and isn't being a wimp like the rest of us. I include myself in that wimp category. I guess I did sign the petition, so I guess I did do something.

I agree with you. Money is a huge snare. It may be the biggest snare we have in this nation. The Lord rescued me from greed for things. I used to keep catalogs to buy things later that I couldn't afford at the time. When a new one came in, I'd look through it and see what I wanted; sometimes I'd spend money I didn't have (loans) on things I didn't need. Now, when I have to go to Wal-Mart, I look around and see a bunch of "things." All these things I used to covet are not necessary and have no function except to draw my eyes from Christ and steal His resources; and I don't even want to do that anymore. We try to impress people with what we have, with our high station in life, but we are really making ourselves low in the kingdom by taking our eyes off Jesus. Greed is truly idolatry. So sad. And when we're doing it, prior to Jesus teaching us the true way in our heart, we usually don't even realize what we're doing; there are so many rationalizations to make sin seem holy enough, or at least innocent and acceptable. There's a leper colony in India - lepers that could be healed, their suffering eased, with the proper medications. They are, most of them, Christians, tended also by Christians. And it's more important for us to have richly furnished homes. It makes me sad. We're supposed to take care of our brothers and sisters in the Lord.

I'm sad for all those who don't understand these things. They're really missing out.

It also saddens me that so many pastors and church leaders are so misguided. I guess that's what comes from the good Lord giving us free will. It will all be sorted out in the end. The wheat and the tares grow together. If only the tares would turn into wheat - some can, and some will, praise God.

God bless you, Bernie, for standing for truth. You've used Scripture to back up what you've said, and you've even changed your tactic along the way according to counsel that you considered. I pray the Lord continue to guide you.

That is why, for Christ's sake, I delight in weaknesses, in insults, in hardships, in persecutions, in difficulties. For when I am weak, then I am strong.

Hi all,

Boy, we were weak tonight! Just some feedback on Wednesday's show. Wow, everything went wrong, technically! The equipment was being updated in the studio, and there was last-minute fiddling to get it to work. Then when I started broadcasting, the show didn't go over the cable. When it did go, the audio was so low that no one could really hear it... without trying super hard. Good thing I had a back-up tape... oops! I accidentally put in a 30 minute tape, not a 60 minute one! Good thing we have another back-up on VHS... oops, the staff forgot to put one of those in also! Reminds me of the early days in TV productions... seems like Satan trying to stop us with all kinds of weird oddities... always something different... I think I can salvage the first 30 minutes for my webcast...

Those who were in the studio said it was one of the best shows, content wise. Tentatively, Pastor Steve Van Horn and I will try it again next week. Pastor Steve really got fired-up in talking about all the damage being done with these false Gospels (health & wealth prosperity teachings) in Africa. I'm also tentatively scheduled to appear as a guest on the TV show "Answers for a Thirsty World" on Nov. 10th. I'll be talking about the issues with Catholicism, and why Catholicism is against the gospel of grace. I know that sounds like fighting words, but I'll bring up the teaching from the Catholic Catechism and show how the Catholic system teaches that we can "atone" for our own sins. (If you have a Catholic Catechism, see paragraphs 1459 & 1460.) For those who know the Bible, obviously it is Christ alone who atones/expiates our sins.

3. Hagee Scandal Plan.

People are asking, what's my goal? How long will I keep this up? My Answer: the big picture is taking Pastor Hagee through the Matt. 18 process to it's ultimate conclusion. Either he will eventually repent, or else the church will reject him for his misdeeds. This may take years, and it's only a small part of my ministry (my goal is 5 to 10% of my total ministry effort). My main ministry is evangelism. The two biggest issues are his family-controlled Board of Directors and being compensated almost $1 million from donors for what he reports as a 16 hr. per week job in his TV ministry.

Not many of you should presume to be teachers, my brothers, because you know that we who teach will be judged more strictly.

Hi all,

I recently sent the following email to my Board of Directors (and Pastor George of Sonrise Church in San Antonio). You may find this interesting.

Overview:
In the last few weeks, I sent the Open Letter (Petition) to Pastor Hagee & his staff (I don't know if his staff (Cornerstone Church in San Antonio) was able to receive them; may have been censored). This "open letter"/petition was sent with the names of slightly over 100 signatures (see: http://raydehler.com/fgn/ for the "open letter"/petition, signatures, and all info).

I also sent about 100 postcards to pastors in the San Antonio area, near Pastor Hagee's church, to inform them of their local brother's problem. I got only one response/feedback, from Pastor George of Sonrise Church, and it was negative. He reached me by phone and we talked for about 15 minutes. He sent an email follow-up below. By the way, I'm still trying to contact Pastor Hagee by phone, as well as his wife and son, who are on his Board of Directors. In addition, I'm still trying to contact another of his Board Members, Allan Hume. I'm leaving daily phone messages for them to call me back. A representative for Pastor Hagee did call back yesterday and said that there is no way for me to talk to Pastor Hagee, in person or over the phone. He mentioned that a lawyer will be contacting me. Evidently, Pastor Hagee has time and (donor) money to talk to me through a lawyer, but not directly as Jesus told us to do in Matt. 18. (I'm not impressed.)

My response to Pastor George's email is below. Following that is his original, untouched email:

Dear Pastor George,

Thanks for your concern. At least you care enough to write. It has been my experience that most Christians don't know or don't care (lukewarm, not hot or cold).

You say I have not followed through correctly on Matt. 18 because I did not confront Pastor Hagee IN PERSON. First, I tried by phone, and was denied, and hung-up on. Based on your suggestion, I tried again, and was specifically told (by a different representative) that Pastor Hagee would not talk to me, even in person. He does not take walk-ins. I was informed that I would be contacted instead by his lawyers. If you have any concrete suggestions on how to better proceed according to Matt. 18, I am more than ready to try it! I will continue to try to get to him in person by attempting to reach his Board of Directors (his wife, son, and Alen Hume).

You say I didn't not get permission from my Pastor to confront Hagee. First, I did tell my Pastor (Clark Tanner, BCC.org). In our brief conversation, he seemed to agree that it was a shame regarding what Pastor Hagee was doing in the way of compensation. However, I see no need to get his approval before confronting someone in sin... Matt. 18 and nothing in the Bible I'm aware of says that I need to. Secondly, another BCC pastor (Greg Wright) is on my Board of Directors, of which I have also briefly discussed this with. There was no objection to my course of action.

You say I'm using a petition which is not in the Bible. I'd say it's a manifestation of Matt. 18: the church confronting the brother in sin. Pastor Hagee is in sin, I believe, and the church is the body of Christ, of which every believer is a member.

As for recruiting other witnesses to confront Pastor Hagee, you say it is wrong to not first get their Pastor's permission/approval. Look, we are all brothers. Peers. Please read and meditate on Matt. 23:9-11 (link).

You say I have defined my own definition of greed. Meanwhile, on the phone, you admit that no compensation value is ever too high. I think you demonstrate a lack of critical thinking and reasonableness. First, I think the Bible is crystal clear about how Preachers should not be lovers of money. Also, the only reason why Pastor Hagee gets away with this is because he has a family-controlled board, not truely made up of his peers, as legitimate organizations operate. On top of that, I show actual data to compare his compensation with other media ministers. The difference is quite glaring. Did you see the charts and graphs? I think you must be quite calloused to not see that taking over $1 million from donors for personal gain is wrong. You referred to some articles that seem to explain all of Pastor Hagee's deeds, yet I can't find them, and you are unable to supply them to me. I fail to see what you are basing your logic on.

You say that churches are autonomous, and are therefore beyond reproach by other churches. I think that no church is beyond rebuke. I believe that all believers are members of the one true church, Christ's body. Christ is not divided. We may be divided by space, but there's no reason to be divided in spirit, for the sake of dividing. No church operates in a vacuum, as if to be islands unto themselves.

I may have offended many. A cancer patient may also be offended to hear that he needs a painful operation. But it's necessary to get healing. You may also be offended if you were woken-up in the dead of night. But if you were woken because of a fire in your house, hopefully you'd appreciate it, and not go back to sleep cursing, as the flames destroy you. You also fail to see the damage that Pastor Hagee is doing to the ministry and church, validating unbelievers who say "preachers are just greedy."

Pastor Hagee may have good standing in his community. It's irrelevant. Jesus confronted the Pharissee's often, and they were also in good standing. "Good standing" is not an exception to the Matt. 18 process outlined by our Lord. King David was also in good standing when he was confronted by the prophet Nathan (2 Sam 12).

I myself am open to Matt. 18. If you think I am in error, please provide Scripture. I'm trying to apply scripture (Matt. 18 and 2 Tim. 3:16 (link)).

Please help me to follow Matt. 18 better if you have any suggestions.

I spoke to you on the phone the other day about my feelings concerning your call for John Hagee to repent for what you say is the sin of greed. This e-mail is to call for your repentance for not practicing the Matthew 18 principle in a true Biblical context and for not working in conjunction with the leadership of your local church but rather through a para-church group of which you are the founder and director.

You have shown yourself to be ignorant of Biblical church structure and authority.

Mistakes you have made:

You did not attempt to come in person to San Antonio to confront Pastor Hagee You did not get the endorsement of your own pastor to confront this issue.

You are using a petition which I can find no where in the Bible to be Biblical in Matthew 18

You have rallied other believers in your cause apart from the authority of their local churches. (If you were a pastor and these where people under your leadership as there pastor and they agreed with you then maybe)

You have made it your responsibility to define greed in the life of a person who lives in capitalistic, free market society and then pass judgment over this person who through his own work draws a salary that is recorded through the IRS records (greed is an issue of the heart not an amount earned, even in the ministry)

You have forgotten that local churches are autonomous and that if the members of Cornerstone Church are supporting their pastor then what right do you have to judge there pastor.

You have a little over 100 signatures of people who agree with you but you have offended many other Christians with your personal attack of a brother in good standing in his community, church, family, nation who has won countless people to the saving knowledge of our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ.

I believe it is you who should repent and I for one have already forgiven you for actions and I am praying that you will reconsider your campaign against John Hagee.

I am still collecting more signatures, and will send Pastor Hagee the updates, until it is evident that the Christian community knows about this scandal that he has brought upon himself. For the good of the church, Christ's body, let's all pray that he repents and makes retribution for this great greed sin of his. As for our part, all we can do is follow our Lord's advice about how to confront a brother in sin; Matt. 18:15-17.

Hi all-

I've been emailing some other prominent Pastors about the Pastor Hagee's million-dollar money scandal. By and large, they don't reply. I did get one reply, and I thought I'd respond to it and show you my response. This reply is from "Richard" with "Harvest Ministries" (Pastor Greg Laurie's church, in the Calvary Chapel denomination). By the way, keep in mind that Calvary Chapel is my favorite denomination of all the Christian denominations.

Below is my reply, followed by his original reply.

Letter 3: Bernie's Reply to Richard:

Dear Richard,

Thanks for your reply about Hagee's money scandal (Hagee pays himself over $1 million from his ministry's donors). Let me say upfront that I've emailed quite a few ministries, with virtually no feedback, so I appreciate your interest. Also, please note that Calvary Chapel is one of my favorite Christian denominations.
You seem to have 8 points. I'll list each one in red, then reply in blue.

1. "We cannot judge each other’s heart on how the Lord speaks to each one through the Holy Spirit on what we should and should not do in standing up against unrighteousness, unless it is clearly against God’s Word. "

I agree that we can't judge each other's heart. I'm not advocating that, either. If you feel that God is leading you to NOT rebuke Pastor Hagee, then I accept that; only I would like to know the Scriptural reason for it. Sometimes we do things on feelings, rather than God's wisdom. We should be able to help each other discern God's will. I do believe that that taking over $1 million from donors for personal gain is against God's Word. I can quote many, many verses against it. Here's a sampling (click on the link to read them):
Matthew 6:24, 1 Timothy 3:2-4 & Hebrews 13:5. I have to wonder, if you don't think it's too gross to be taking over $1 million from donors, what would move you to righteous indignation? Two million? Ten million? Is there no amount to move you? Is it because greed is such an acceptable part of American life that we can no longer recognize it in our culture, even by Church leaders?

2. "In general, the Bible does not instruct us to make big protests against greediness, but rather the battle belongs to the Lord, and we are to do our part primarily through prayer, as we are taught from Ephesians 6."
Who said anything about a "big protest?" This is really about following our Lord Jesus' advice on how to rebuke a brother, see Matthew 18:17. When you say "our battle belongs to the Lord" I think you are referring to Old Testament passages, which teach that we are to rely on God, and not the arm of the flesh. I agree. But what does that have to do with confronting a brother in sin? I don't see a conflict, and if there was, Jesus' direct teaching is always superior to Old Testament types and shadows. Ephesians 6 is about spiritual battles, not about confronting a brother in sin.

3. "While we are to speak up against unrighteousness, it has become almost a given that Christians are more against everyone and everything than for them. We need to share His love more than His wrath."

I think it is important, as Christians, that we are balanced. We must speak of love, as you say, but also of righteousness and sin. Probably one of the biggest charges against Christians is hypocrisy. We preach Christ, who gave it all for us, yet turn a blind-eye to preachers who are guilty and steal from the flock's donations to God? I also agree that we don't need to go around telling sinners that they are sinners; they already know that. They need to hear the message of redemption. However, this is about confronting a BELIEVER and MINISTER OF GOD regarding sin, not about judging the ungodly. (I'm giving Pastor Hagee the benefit of the doubt, since he claims to be a Christian and attempts to preach the gospel, as he sees it. That he teaches a version of the corrupted & evil "prosperity gospel" will be saved for a later discussion. Click here to read about some of this theological issues.)
4. "Going up against greediness in the pulpit even with tact and dignity can bring about some serious consequences, so we are to count the cost. It is very easy sometimes to try to do the right thing but in the wrong way (Philippians 4:6)."

I've found that one of the consequences is that people will ask "well, how much do YOU make?" It's a good question, and I fear a question that almost every minister wants to dodge. Personally, after seeing these issues, I'm trying to be a role-model, and openly publishing all my financials (click here to see). As a nonprofit 501C3, this is required by law anyway, but still, most ministries seem to make it very difficult to find this information. Churches are not required to report this, so they don't. Could this be a major reason your ministry doesn't want to talk about it... not wanting to disclose executive salaries, since it is a church-based ministry? Philippians 4:6 talks about being patient and bringing requests before God... how does that relate to confronting a brother in sin per Matthew 18:17? I think this is being done in a patient way, and by God's leading (after all, God, Jesus, is speaking in Matthew 18:17, and this is the process that I'm following).

5. "The Lord Himself knows when to become physical, as in John 2 and Matthew 21, and drive out the greedy religious leaders."

I think we are to learn from the Lord. He told us how to view money. He told us how to rebuke those who are in sin. Why can't we listen and obey? I'm afraid that the reasons I see are mostly laziness, indifference, & cowardice. If you really love the body of Christ (the Church), wouldn't you do something when it has a serious problem? Is it a case of the hired-hand not caring as much for the church as the true shepherd (John 10:12)?
6. "For our part, it is usually better to simply share the message of the saving grace of the Lord, and allow Him to change the heart (Proverbs 15:1)."

Then I guess you don't follow all of Scripture's admonitions, just the easy part... to avoid controversy? Isn't Scripture useful for correcting and reproof? Because of your "hands-off" approach to correction, I suggest you meditate more on Matthew 18:17. Ask yourself: "Why did our Lord Jesus say this? What did he want us to do?"

I also suggest that you read and ponder this well-known verse, and consider it's actual application in life:

2 Timothy 3:16

All Scripture is God-breathed and is useful for teaching,
rebuking, correcting and training in righteousness,

7. "We are to be responsible stewards of where our money goes and how it is used. Remember that it all belongs to Him anyway, not just a portion of it. So when you give, give with wisdom, responsibility and rejoicing."

I agree completely. We are also called to be good "stewards." All Christians are a part of God's Kingdom; we are to love and care for each other. A good steward does not look the other way when he sees his master's money being stolen. The parts of the Body of Christ should be feeding and encouraging each other (1 Corin. 12).

8. "When necessary, the Lord will do battle with those that need it."

This is not about battle, but following ALL the advice in the Bible about rebuking a fellow believer, in the hopes of restoring both the individual and the health of the church Matthew 18:15-17 .

Richard, again, deep appreciation to you for at least reading the petition and responding... much more than many others do. I do hope that you'll reconsider and sign the petition to Pastor Hagee: http://raydehler.com/fgn/ .

By the way, I don't understand why Pastor Laurie is on the TBN channel (read this article to see the seriousness of it: http://www.equip.org/free/JAT260.htm ). TBN is at the forefront of corrupting the Gospel of Christ with it's false prosperity gospel of "health and wealth." By being on TBN, you are validating it's existence. If Satan had a Christian TV network, to pollute the gospel, would you join it? That's what TBN is; a polluted gospel network. I figure your ministry may respond "that is were many viewers are, so we hold out the truth to them." However, I think you are doing more to confuse viewers by validating the TBN TV network through partnership with them. It would be best to leave TBN alone and let them self-destruct (Philippians 3:19). You are helping to keep them alive by partnering with them financially through your productions.

Keep the good work in proclaiming Jesus!

You have a few more days to read and sign the petition (click here or go to: http://raydehler.com/fgn/ ). You have until 9-1-05 to sign, then I will deliver the open letter to him and his Board of Directors (which consists of himself, his wife, his son, and one other person).

Will you stand with me in confronting Pastor Hagee with his very public and high-profile sin of stealing from God's people? His donors gave to build the kingdom of God, not to give Pastor Hagee almost a $1 million dollar paycheck. Most Christians don't seem to know or care, that's why it's so easy for preachers like him to get away with it; and it encourages other greedy ministers to follow likewise. If you have a good reason for NOT signing, that's ok, but please don't let it be because of laziness or cowardice. Being a coward is a very serious sin:

Not many of you should presume to be teachers, my brothers, because you know that we who teach will be judged more strictly.

Hi All-

I reworked and revised the petition, due to many discussions and prayer. The big change: rather than go to the IRS, the goal is to perfectly align with our Lord Jesus' advice in Matthew 18. This is implemented by:

1. Explaining the problem.

2. Writing an open letter to Pastor Hagee, asking him to repent and make amends for this serious lifestyle of sin/greed in his life and mishandling donor money.

3. Asking for witnesses (you) to sign the letter (petition) and stand-up to Pastor Hagee as a fellow believer. If he refuses to repent, we are not to treat him as a fellow believer in fellowship, but regard him as an unbeliever, according to our Lord Jesus.

It's very difficult to stand-up to a fellow believer that is sinning. It wasn't easy for Jesus to stand-up to the religious leaders of His day and clear the temple (Matt. 21:12-13), . It wasn't easy for the prophet Nathan to confront King David in his sin (2 Samuel 12:7). The choice: do you want to do what's easy, or do you want to obey God? It's bad enough that Pastor Hagee is a very visible minister, bringing shame upon the whole church (the body of Christ) by his greed. But he adds to that by condoning the sin by what is called "the prosperity gospel." Jesus said we can't serve two masters (God and money). Hagee says we can (as long as you give a minimum 10% to the church). What does God tell us? That we are to use ALL of our time, treasure, and talent as good stewards of God. We need to submit everything to God, not just 10% of our increase.

To sign the petition (open till 9-1-05), click here. So far, there's almost 100 names, 1/10th of my goal. Pastor Hagee must be laughing, saying "see, who cares?" However, much good is being wrought by this, in that the news is going out. I firmly believe that it's impossible for this high-level sin to continue, and I think the crash will be mighty and loud when it happens... a mini-judgment day for him. I wouldn't be surprised at all if it ends up with some jail time for him. Speaking of jails and ministers, here's an article about the investigations with Benny Hinn (article) and Morris Cerrulo (article).

Some pastors have signed this, mostly friends of mine. Why won't more sign? Two reasons I've seen. One, they don't want to raise the issue, so people won't ask them how much THEY make... let's not go there... Two, some want to be positive-only. I consider this a compromise... I would call them "ear-ticklers" (see 2 Tim. 2:3, click here). They don't want to upset supporters or donors. Apparently, they fear man (or loss of income) more than God. Some fundraising experts say it costs about $20 to acquire a good email address, so they do what they can to protect these investments in donor acquisition!

By the way, I found out that his church compensation, as Senior Pastor, is also disclosed on the G.E.T. tax form. From both ministries combined, he is taking well over $1 million of donor's money, yearly... money that was intended to build the kingdom of God. What will his donors think when they learn of this? We'll soon see...

I talked with Ben Clifton, a fellow believer, and leader of a Portland chapter of RTB (http://www.reasons.org/chapters/portland/index.shtml). He grew up thinking "religion is stupid." Evolution & science gave him answers to the wonders of the universe. Then he became a believer, and now he sees God in His creation. Same creation, but two different ways to view it.

Is religion stupid? Yes and no. Yes, in that religion (works to impress God), good works, and philosophy is worthless for dealing with our sin. The only solution for sin is the one God provided: Christ's death on the cross. If you're trying to earn God's love through religion or good works, then you don't understand grace, and the relationship that God wants to have with you (as a child with God the Father, and as a brother with Jesus Christ). This is why we don't push "religion," but rather a "relationship" with God. As you read the Old Testament, this is what God tried to tell us through the prophets; and in the New Testament Jesus Christ made it perfectly clear by His ministry.

My aim is to help Christians be better stewards, so besides exposing some of the worst famous greedy preachers and ministers, I also point out and list some of the more noble ones, such as James Dobson and "Focus on the Family." Dr. Dobson is a great role model of corporate responsibility. Contrasting that would be Pastor John Hagee (photo, left), who siphons out almost $1 million from just one of his ministries (he's also Senior Pastor of a church with undisclosed income).

Hi All,

I wanted to send an encouraging email I received. When I preach the gospel, I like to give examples of what's good and bad, passing for "Christianity" these days. This letter says it all (unedited):

Hello Bro Bernie,

First all I want to thank God Almighty who has lead me to your web site, what a wonderful and a great teacher you are. Today was the second time to listen to you and I can't agree more to what you said regarding greed in churches.

June 28th this year will BE my fifth birthday in Christ therefore, I'm still young and I continue to learn from servants like you. I was a Catholic before my salvation and really the word of God was way far away from me than I thought. When I got saved the Spirit of the Lord which dwells in me helps me discern who are true Bible believing Bible teachers and some who use it for their own gain. It so shameful how the devil has blinded believers to having flocking to these huge churches which teaches prosperity and faith movement. "believe and receive" "name and claim" "confess and possess" doctrine. I'm so disgusted how greed has caused some preachers not to fear God anymore. How can someone stand on the pulpit or TV and openly deceive people with no fear at all, leaves my mouth ajar. I don't listened to TBN and never will because of that. Jesus who is the standard of righteous has nothing he possessed, why have we failed to learn from Him. Preachers claim to teach the gospel but yet pick and choose what suits them. It is amazing how these prosperity teachers have omitted the bible from their teachings, and if they quote it will be twisted to fit in their message.

It is so disgusting how believers go and put money on their feet believe they will receive a hundred folds, shameful indeed. I suppose they base this on the book of Act when people brought money and their possession to the disciples. The part these greed preachers missed is, that the disciples shared all what was brought to the needy.

True this country is blessed beyond measure. It is surprising to see people who doesn't know the Lord pouring their hearts out to help the needy. I wonder if you watch secular TV but on Primetime show, on ABC, they aired an interview. Diane Sawyer interviewed this famous actor Brad Pitt who is now gear and fired up to eradicate poverty in Africa. The showed some clips on his recent trip to Ethiopia which was so depressing indeed, then almost towards the end of the program, they showed his huge mansion and asked him if will live there anymore( I supposed they asked him that because he has recently been divorced). He said "someone else will live there, after I have seen first hand how people live in African and how accepting their are of the unimaginable lives they live, I cannot live in such house anymore".

I thank God for what I have, a rented apt (roof on my head), a job (providing all my needs) a car to take me to and fro to wherever I want. What else can ask for. the bottom line is; whether you are a billionaire or a content person like me is, one can only sleep in one bed at a time, drive one car at a time, eat one one place at a time, be in one place at the time and the list goes on. Greed which causes us to want and want more blinds us to see that at the end all is garbage. I enjoyed all your jokes today especially the man who took gold to heaven.

I will continue to pray and support your ministry in anyway I can. People like you are the ones we should support because you're in the service of the Lord truly for the lost souls not for you own gain.

May the Lord continue to bless you and your ministry, to proper abundantly by His grace. Be strong and courageous, said Paul, God did not give you the spirit of fear but of power and of sound mind.

Hi all-

I just got back from doing two shows. The replay schedule is below. Obviously, if you see this show, I am no polished TV personality! However, I believe that something is better than nothing, and these shows can be cleaned-up later for re-runs (shown 6 months later), and webcasting.

First 25 minutes, Show #1:

Bernie talks to the owner/webmaster of www.PrayerShack.com . Sometimes people leave church or the faith because "doing church" gets old and tired; there's seems to be no spirit. Dave and his website works to freshen-up the personal faith and relationship with Jesus by other means. Yes, the secret is out; there's nothing holier about meeting in a church rather than a home or other place. We still need to gather, but at a church building isn't the only option. What's vital is a relationship with Jesus, and growing in the love/knowledge/growth of God's Word daily. Dave also shared a reason why one should accept Christ: because everyone is built with a God-shaped hole that only God can fill. We can try to fill it with money, lust, pleasure, etc., but none of it satisfies; only a relationship with Christ will give us internal peace.

Second 25 minutes, Show #2:

Keith and Phillip explained the music ministry of Hideout (see www.hideoutFestival.org). They had many great concert shots on video as they were talking. Keith and Phillip also shared what Christ has been doing in their lives.

I'm surprised that people are really looking for the message. There's a need. Problem is, I don't have the time anymore to edit the shows for web playback. Instead, I'm putting more time into show planning and prep. for the local TV shows. I need to either find a volunteer for this, or raise funds for an editor. Please lift this up in prayer; that I make the right decisions. My eyes are open for volunteers, and I do ask...

Today, I received a viewer response (45 yr. old woman) from a gospel presention on the web (first shown on TV in the Portland area):

" Thanks to your minisrty I am a NEW believer and therefore a NEW person, PRAISE THE LORD. I can't believe I ever lived without Him. He is so kind and awesome to wait for me without destroying me for all the bad things i have done. Will you send me a Bible? I don't have one. Thanks for your internet radio broadcasts."

I asked her for more info, and she replied:

"I was raised in the catholic church where we only learned the law but after getting a computer and discovering your misistry quite by chance (divine intervention) i heard the gospel and saw the light! thanks for being there. i will look forward to my bible and will spread the good news to all!"

Yes, we will send her a Bible. A team member of this ministry has donated the time, materials, etc. for such a response.

Hi all,

On Wed. 5-17-05, I interviewed J. Jackson from the Christian music group "ApologetiX" ( http://apologetix.com/ ). I thought it went very well. I played 3 clips of their music; and J. shared his faith in Christ, his motivation, and what God has been doing in his life recently. One thing I picked-up from him was his devotion to Bible reading. He reads the Bible daily, and has read through the entire Bible each year, for many years. I need to do that...

My next show is on Wed. June 1st, 2005. I'll be interviewing an author on a research book about "tithing." (See http://www.FreeGoodNews.com for a free download of the book.) Many churches today use "tithing" as a manipulative tool to get donors to contribute. As Christians, the tithe should not be our practice; rather, a practice and mentality called "stewardship." In my experience, those who advocate that Christians should tithe also redefine the word "tithe" (they don't use the Old Testament practice and definition).

Hi all,

I'm writing this Wed. night, right after the live TV show. Our topic was the Bible book of Genesis. Does it sound like a fairy tale (magic apples, talking snakes, etc.)? Paul and Ben from the Portland Chapter of "Reasons to Believe" gave some interesting comments (click here for their website). We had five callers, but only time to take three of them.

We had our share of technical difficulties (screetching sounds, hitting wrong buttons, etc.). I clean these shows up for webcast, so it's ok. I guess you "get what you pay for" (we are all volunteers; no paid staff). Unlike ministers, we aren't paid to be good; we're good for nothing.

The bottom line: creation is evidence of a Creator. It's such nonsense to think that a brainless "nature" could create things so complex (for example, DNA) that even intelligent humans can't figure it out. It may be a mystery regarding how God did it, but that He did it should be obvious (by definition, evolution is Godless). Do you have a relationship with the Creator of the universe and everything in it?

Hi all,

The music video, the free webcast for last week and this week, has been updated. I noticed that I wasn't able to see it at home; the bandwidth requirement was too high. Therefore, most people probably weren't able to view the video (just hear the audio). To view it at home, you probably still need at least a DSL or cable modem (not dial-up). You could probably listen to the audio file just fine with dial-up. Also with dial-up, you can go to the download page, download the video, then watch it on your computer at perfect speed.

5. Final Easter Thought
Everyone has a "fear of death." It's related to the "fear of the unknown." Is there an after-life? What happens to me after I die? Christianity is the only religion that has it's central character (Christ) as someone who has overcome death. Christ died, and rose again, never to die again. Christ promised us the same, to those who believe (1 John 5:12-13).

Do you believe in Christ? Is your faith "alive?" If you're faith is dead, then you are also dead in your sin (James 2:14-26). Take this time to now evaluate your life, and your faith. Contact me if you would like to know more about this.

1. THE CBE Interview. There's a theological battle within Evangelic Christianity regarding "gender equality" (click here to read about it; an article by Professor Roland Cap Ehlke of Concordia University Wisconsin). Should women be under authority of man, or should they be totally equal before God? I interviewed Mimi Haddad, the President of CBE, which stands for full equality. 1. Good movie. Here's a great movie to bring your friends to: it's a dramady called "Diary of a mad black woman." It's entertaining. Best yet, it introduces many elements of faith (God, Bible, Jesus, prayer, forgiveness) in a very entertaining and non-threatening way.

2. Board of Directors. I heard back from the IRS; I'm close to getting my 501(c)(3) recognition (maybe as soon as this week!). One of the conditions I needed to meet was expanding the Board of Directors. There are now three others on the Board (click here to read about them).

3. This week's webcast. Now playing is my original episode on "Greed in the Church." I point out, by name, some of the popular ministries that have a serious problem with greed, and some that serve as role-models. Part 2 is from 8:30-8:50 pm. I invited a guest, but I don't know if he has accepted. Guest? Have you ever seen the cable-access show called "The Joe Show?" I invited Joe (and a friend of his) to join me in a religious chat session. Someone once described him as a cross between Howard Stern and Rush Limbaugh. If he doesn't accept for this week, I'll do another segment where I show Christians how to present the Gospel (non-Christians are invited to watch and accept the Lord, if interested).

2. IRS Update. I finally heard back from the IRS, regarding 501c3 recognition. They want some additional info. I estimate this might all get done in the next 2 weeks!

Hi all, just a quick email,

One of the most impressionable speeches for me from the National Religious Broadcaster's (NRB) Convention was a speech by Dr. John MacDonald (click here to see his ministry at oneplace.com, called "Walk in the Word"). I didn't know of him prior to this.

The speech was an exhortation to do the work of an evangelist. Many times, even preachers get "burnt out" and need to get re-adjusted, or re-ignited. I found this speech very helpful and encouraging to me. I think it would be good to forward to your Pastor and missionary friends (I was told when I bought it that it was ok to pass around and even re-broadcast).

Especially good for me was to hear him validate my views regarding the way of life for Preachers-- non-materialistic. In the audio, this is in the time range of 6:00-6:45. I consider this a small miracle, because I really needed to hear this for confirmation, and when he said these few sentences, he was looking right at me (the only time during the whole speech). I felt like God was talking to me through him.

The speech starts out pretty slow, so have some patience. He has a really funny "donkey story" in there, too. Of course, you lose a lot by not seeing the video, but I hope the audio is as encouraging to you as it was to me.

2. National Religious Broadcaster's Convention (NRB). I just got back yesterday from this event in Anaheim, CA. It was very good for me. I learned so much about building the ministry, and got answers to questions I didn't even have.

I didn't know what to expect. I was afraid it might be corrupted, like TBN, on TV. To my surprise, the event was rather solid, with no sign of the greedy Prosperity (Health & Wealth) "Gospel" scammers around. I'll be putting much more info about this in the next few days. Can you imagine Benny Hinn sharing a stage with Joni Eareckson Tada? Benny Hinn's nonsense can't stand in the midst of reality. Joni appeared and gave a moving speech. This is key: correct application of Luke 9:23.

3. Oneplace downloads. January is my first month being hosted on the web at: http://www.oneplace.com/ministries/247 . For January, there were over (700) MP3 downloads. It will be interesting and exciting to see what kind of trend happens over the first 3 months. These are floating all over the world, literally. Some visitors are from many different countries, including Australia, Singapore, etc.

Last Show. The last show I did with Director Keith Teasdale (Hideout Ministries) is now replaying on cable TV in Portland's Washington County. Click here for the replay schedule, time, channel, etc. On this show, Brad Butcher of the Luis Palau Evangelism Network also presented the gospel (in the second half of the show).

Did I go too far? I conducted a survey of the top media ministries, to see how they compensate (pay) their top ministers/executives. The results were very surprising to me. Some are very reasonable, some are outrageous. See for yourself here. Some of the best were Focus on the Family and Coral Ridge Ministries. Some of the very worst were Dr. Hagee, Peter Popoff, Billy Graham, Paul & Jan Crouch, and Steve Arterburn.

You know, it doesn't bother me when they are preacher's I don't particularly listen to; but people like Steve Arterburn I really like, so it really pains me to report this nonsense. Ministers like Steve Arterburn are also proficient authors, and royalties from books sold outside of their ministry normally go directly to them (and the amount is unknown). This is also very troubling, as they are paid to write these on company time, get free advertising by the ministry, and yet they pocket the profit. If it wasn't for their publicly-financed ministry, they'd have no name and no sales, since they wouldn't finance their own advertising. (Believe me, there is no end to "would be" authors who would like to sell their books.)

Again, did I go too far? Most of the feedback said "no." I do appreciate the feedback that said I need to better explain my position, but I just don't have time given the part-time nature of this ministry. Therefore, I will do it in two stages.

1. Expose the data to the public.
2: Explain why this is such a problem (for those who don't see the "obviousness" of it).

What I learned in Sunday School today: If you're a Christian, then you're a full-time paid minister. We are all in the ministry. It doesn't matter if your job is preaching sermons at church, designing computer chips, or pumping gas at the local filling station. TAKE THAT TO HEART. "Some people are paid to be good (like pastors), but we are 'good for nothing' ."

Financial Support. Thanks to all those who supported me financially in 2004. I hope to give you receipts in a few weeks. My 501(c)(3) status is still pending (it was supposed to have arrived by now...). When I receive my status, then all previous gifts are recognized by the government (retro-active). So far, this ministry is financed by myself primarily (91%). One of my goals for this year is to prove that my support is broad-based... something the government wants to see in a non-profit corporation.

1-9-05 Update: Analysis of Executive Pay in Nonprofit Corporations

Hi all-

I just completed a review of 59 nonprofit organizations regarding executive pay. I believe that a top salary should be about $150K. Many fine organizations are under this, while quite a few are over it. Go to this link to see the tables and graph of the most popular organizations doing "good works."

Why am I doing this? It upsets me that there are people making too much money off of the good faith of donors. This is public information, but I don't think the public knows about it. I believe that once it is exposed, those organizations that are more responsible and noble will get rewarded over those that have a problem with greed. I'm doing my part to expose this abuse of public trust. It's especially scandalous when the organization is supposed to be "Christian-based." Thank God that there are noble organizations, such as NW Medical Teams, Doctors without Borders, Compassion International, Habitat for Humanity, etc. It saddens me to report that some Christian organizations, such as Samaritan's Purse, are what I would consider seriously "overboard" in executive compensation.

Tithing, a very good book (click here). Unfortunately, many evangelical Churches are unfaithful to the Scriptures when they teach "tithing" as a practice. Instead, we should be learning about "stewardship," which is a much higher calling. Personally, I think many Preachers preach tithing from a lack of faith. If they teach the truth about heartfelt giving, they may be afraid that they won't get enough to support themselves, staff, property, etc. Here's an excellent book that covers the truth about tithing (what the Bible teaches, tithing history throughout the church, etc).

1-3-05 Update: Compassion Test

Hi all-

You all heard about the devastating Tsunami in Asia. The first Sunday after it happened, the Pastor at our Church said a prayer (when the death toll was 7k, but now it's 20 times that). Immediately this verse came to my mind:

James 2:14-17

What good is it, my brothers, if a man claims to have faith but has no deeds? Can such faith save him? Suppose a brother or sister is without clothes and daily food. If one of you says to him, “Go, I wish you well; keep warm and well fed,” but does nothing about his physical needs, what good is it? In the same way, faith by itself, if it is not accompanied by action, is dead.

I'm firmly convinced that we should DO something. Even if it's helping with $10 or $50. First, even though it is really nothing by itself, it is something. Second, we will be doing our part (imagine if most people gave money, how it would add up).

But who would be the best group to fund? From doing my research into ministry financial integrity, NW Medical Teams immediately came to mind. They are rock solid. They don't preach the Gospel in word, but in deed. Please join me and click here to donate on-line, quick and simple. What you do to the "least of these" you do directly for our Lord Jesus, and I know you would send help if it was our Lord who needed it (Matthew 25:31-46).

Of course, if you need help yourself, such as if you're unemployed, please don't feel guilty. God wants you to take care of yourself first, so you aren't a burden to others (be self-sufficient, rather than a drain on the government and others). But most of us can do something, but don't take the time to do it, which must be grieving to the Holy Spirit.

Hi all-

Giving recommendation. It's almost the end of the year. Did you finish your 2004 giving? I wanted to give a recommendation. One of my favorite ministries is Compassion International (click here). Compassion International has been rated very high by independent analysts, as far as charities are conducted.

I think every Christian should sponsor at least one child from a needy part of the world. There are people crying out for the basic necessities in life, and by giving in the name of Christ, you can bring a lot of praise to the Father. Hopefully the love of God will motivate you.

The cost is only $28 per month. You can also send them additional tax-deductible gifts to bless the child's family (a "family gift"). You can also periodically write to the child and develop a relationship with them.

For those who have the money, another interesting option is to by a "forever" sponsorship for $6000. If you do this one-time fee option, you can sponsor a child for as long as you and your descendants live, at no additional charge. For example, if you live another 30 years, you sponsor a kid all that time and make no monthly payments. After you pass on, your kids then inherit the sponsorship, with no charges. Then their kids will pick it up, with no charges, etc., until the Lord returns. So with this package, you and many of your kids can sponsor many kids, for just one upfront fee. As the sponsorship costs go up, you don't need to worry about it. Compassion also likes it, because they can invest the money up front. Our family has one of these (when the price wasn't as high... it goes up every year...)

Summary of givers to this ministry. My ministry began in July 2004. So far, I've had six donors, including myself. This is the percentage of donations by givers:

-- 2%: Person B.
-- 1%: Person C.
-- 1%: Person D.
-- 1%: Person E.

My hope is to be broadly supported in the future, to the extent that I could do this full-time. In January the ministry will be going online at oneplace.com, and that should make a world of difference in impact.

Hi friends-

Last Show: Christmas TV Coverage. I changed my plan for the Christmas show. I decided to talk instead about a media report about how much secular TV time is devoted to Jesus Christ in December (it's the time that Christians celebrate His birth, after all). It turns out that of all Christmas-themed programming, less than 3% deals with Jesus, in either a main or superficial way. You can read the 2002 study here.

I also made a short presentation of the Gospel, "4 Spiritual Laws" style.

Next Quarter, Q1'05. I will do a new TV format (currently one 30 min. TV show every other week). Every other week I will do (2) 30 min. shows. The first will be on some spiritual topic, interviewing some expert. The second will be a presentation of the Four Spiritual Laws; I'll be presenting the Four Spiritual Laws over and over again... in an effort to demonstrate Christian basics...

Hi friends-

Response from last e-letter (Campus Crusade for Christ). Some people were upset with me because of what I wrote about Campus Crusade for Christ. Although I mentioned that they did good work (and they do, remember I said that!), I was frustrated in trying to get their financial info. I mentioned that they may be "hiding" behind "church" rules ("Churches" don't need to file tax returns, but para-church organizations do).

I finally found out why they don't file a form 990 tax return (it was not easy to find out). I called the President's office at CCC, and spoke to the secretary. She called someone else, and was told that they don't have to file because their organization is too large. I let them know that that was not a valid legal reason. She transferred me to the person she talked to, and this person thought also that CCC was classified as a "church." She passed me on to the top guy, who told me the real answer, finally. They are a "religious order" (yes, they are also a para-church ministry). As a "religious order," they have their own training and missionaries. "Religious Orders" are exempt from reporting taxes, just like churches.

By the way, I just received an email to my question to them (I had submitted it to their website) about why they don't file a form 990, and it's answer is because they are a "church," which of course is an official "wrong" answer. I guess this just proves how most people, even the ministry workers, aren't aware of nonprofits and what a form 990. I guess I'm at the fore-front of showing people how they can be good stewards in checking out an organization's finances. If more people did this, we wouldn't be seeing the ridiculous extremes (in my view) that exist today in some "ministries."

Since CCC is classified this way, I guess there's no way to check their financials, beyond what they want to show in a sanitized report. It may be impossible to see what their executives make. Some say it is real low, but who knows? Billy Graham has a reputation for living modestly and with a low salary, but the truth is he was paid over $400,000 in the last form 990 his organization submitted. So I guess it's a faith issue.

Personally, the only reason I see for not submitting a form 990 is to withhold info for accountability. I don't think it takes any additional significant time to prepare-- they should have all the info already for their annual reports, etc. I think it's just a matter of disclosure, but that's me. Youth for Christ is a similar in operation to CCC, and they file form 990's. Maybe they don't know they don't have to, or maybe they want to. But when you see what the Youth for Christ directors make in pay, you'll feel sorry for them-- it's low. In fact, it's a motivator to want to support them!

I know the many missionaries (who raise their own support) working for Campus Crusade for Christ are also struggling financially. But this doesn't say anything about the Corporate exec's. As a donor, I'd like to know, and I prefer to give to those organizations who want to disclose form 990's. That's just my opinion, and something I think worth sharing.

Summary: The missionaries for CCC do good work, and desperately need your support. I'm just disappointed that CCC doesn't file a form 990, which they could if they wanted to (there's no law saying they can't, just that they don't need to, because of the classification that they chose to operate under).

Plans on my next show. I was arguing with my seminary professor this morning. It made me realize that I need to back up a notch on my "greed topic." I assumed we were all on the same page, and I could launch into some current-day examples of excessive compensation. But now I see that most people aren't aware of greed. I'm going to back-up and go over the many Scriptures and our Lord's teaching to establish the point that our culture is immersed in the love of money and "the finer things of life." I think our church culture has been successfully invaded by the love of money, from two sources:

1. Capitalism (deeply embedded into the minds of those in the USA)

2. The "Prosperity Gospel"

How much is too much for a minister? My (Leadership class) Professor says the amount doesn't matter; it's the heart that counts. The Bible doesn't say how much is too much. What about half a million dollars (like John Hagee)? That's too much. So where do you draw the line? I guess it just wasn't thought out... maybe my show will start people thinking about these things...

I hope to throw in a few modern examples, and again show others how to look up this information for themselves. Since looking into these form 990's, there are some organizations that have really turned me off (like "The Bible Answer Man"), and some others that have really impressed me (like "NW Medical Teams").

FYI, I did a few shows recently about the Israeli/Palestinian crisis in Israel.

What does Evangelical Christian theology have to say about Israel? Are Jews God's chosen people? A lot of it depends on your theology, and there are different camps. One camp is relatively small, but it has the biggest influence. It's called "Dispensationalism."

There was an excellent interview by Hank Hanegraaff with the historian/author of the following book. It touches on "end times theology," interpreting the book of Revelation, the Left-Behind book series of books, rapture theories, etc.

Seeing the spiritual. It seems like every time my show comes around, the work I do for my secular job simultaneously gets more demanding. After the show, I got a few hours to sleep, and had to arrive at work for a 3 am shift. This is very unusual for me, but it seems like something like this always happens around show time. Last time I got sick just in time for the show (a scratchy throat made it very difficult to speak)... This is one of the major reasons why I remain a believer; the supernatural gets revealed to me in these shows (spiritual oppression & victory). I have lots of stories about this from the shows I've done over the years...

Last show on tithing. The show went well. Again, there was only time for presenting about 25% of the info I had. However, this time I started with an overview and made sure we had a summary. I feel compelled to do another show on the topic, since I have so much material, and tithing is one of the biggest misconceptions and dangers in the Evangelical church today (Doug and I believe). On the one-hand, people feel guilty for not being able to tithe 10%, and on the other, they feel smug if they give 10% or more. The whole truth of "grace" and "stewardship" are totally missing or severely distorted.

I got four research books about tithing from the Seminary library, so I've been learning a lot about all of the aspects of tithing. It is a very deep subject, and it's interesting how it relates to many other subjects (such as grace, generosity, blessing, etc.).

The show was on Ch. 11 (throughout all Portland). The repeat schedule will be posted to the web, and repeats are shown in Washington County only (Ch. 21, Friday 3 pm and Sun. 10 am). In a month or two, they will all be on the web (video & MP3).

Future Shows. I'm going to make another attempt at my "church greed" on Nov. 17th. I've uncovered more info. One of the most flamboyant "ministers" is Benny Hinn, on TV. Ever wonder how much he makes? Some estimate between $500,000 to $1 million per year. Why estimate it? Because he doesn't disclose it, like other para-church ministries are required by law. Churches are exempt, so you can't find out how much your Pastor is paid. Benny's hiding inside the church, so people can't see him. I think it's a scandal. He may be a minister, but his primary income isn't coming from his congregation. He's using the rules to hide. You can be sure that if the IRS goes after him, he'll be claiming that he's being "persecuted."

A few people have asked me to look into "Campus Crusade for Christ" as a positive role-model. I know their work, and have supported missionaries with them. I think they have a good ministry. However, I can't get their financial info. Apparently, they are also hiding behind the "church rules" (they may claim to be a denominational ministry, which is protected just like churches). All I know is that they aren't disclosing their info publicly. I called them (and I'm still a donor), but I couldn't get to their business office, and they haven't returned a phone call from my voice message. Strange. I would like to know what's going on here...

Some of the best financially-managed ministries are "Focus on the Family" and "NW Medical Teams." Thank God for role-models! (I'm referring just to the financial aspect of executive compensation.)

Blogging. I'm working on creating a blog. They are really neat! It is a separate website with a format where I can post "hot topics" and people can leave comments regarding them.

Some people usually these to write a book. For example, on tithing, I could write 5 articles, and revise them as I go. People can leave feedback, which I consider and use as desired. After a few months, the articles can become chapters, and there you have your book or pamphlet.

A few notes about how I think the show went.

I'm starting to come down with something, so I was going to take some cough syrup before I left for the studio. I forgot. So of course, I was having great difficulty trying to talk "smoothly." I was wondering if the viewer thought my voice was breaking because I was getting emotional-- but it was just that I had a lot of congestion.I was also thrown-off schedule because although I got there 1 hr. early, the "cop talk" show was using the studio before me. I had only 10 minutes to set-up. On the plus side, I got to see how they handle their phone calls, which may be helpful in the future.Finally, the last bummer, the time ran out too fast. I barely got through my introductory material. I didn't have time to get into the meat of it, or present a summary. On the plus side, I did share some important scripures, so at least God's word was planted. The next show on 11/3/04 I'll be covering "What is a tithe?" I believe most Evangelical Churches that teach tithing are teaching error. My cohost is a former elder of the church I attend, and he's also researched this topic. Just remember, it's not true that 10% of our income belongs to God. It ALL belongs to Him, and we are called to be good stewards. Forget about 10% or any percentage, and ask God how much and to whom to give it to.

After this show on greed, I got about 3 or 4 emails, all asking more questions or having positive feedback. I'm looking forward to trying it again, and doing a better comprehensive presentation. I'm definitely a work in progress.

By the way, I just finished my seminary class called "Leadership." Let me share a quote with you that really touches me, and I plan to make a poster of it for myself:

"Every preacher ought to be primarily a prophet of God who preaches as God bids him, without regard to results. When he becomes conscious of the fact that he is a leader in his own church or denomination, he has reached a crisis in his ministry. He must now choose one of two courses, that of prophet of God or a leader of men. If he seeks to be a prophet and a leader, he is apt to make a failure of both. If he decides to be a prophet only insofar as he can do without losing his leadership, he becomes a diplomat and ceases to be a prophet at all. If he decides to maintain leadership at all costs, he may easily fall to the level of a politician who pulls the wires in order to gain or hold a position."

Getting Started. Look at that verse, above. Can you believe that the supreme religious leaders at the time of Jesus were judged to have been lovers of money? Why they even tithed! Ok, don't get me started now... that's the topic for my show tomorrow night (Wed. 10-20-04). It will be on Ch. 11, 8-8:30 pm, viewable in the tri-county area.Thank the Lord, there are a few very noble large Christian ministries that are doing a fantastic job when it comes to REASONABLE exec. pay: NW Medical Teams, Coral Ridge Ministries, Focus on the Family, and Compassion International.

Next Show: Greed. Oct. 20th is part 1 of "Greed in the Church." I'm going to talk about the epidemic of greed in Christian ministries today. We need to straighten this out amongst ourselves, so Jesus doesn't have to "clear the Temple" again... The more I look into it, the sicker the situation looks. Now I'm finding much scandal with Hank Hanagraaff "The Bible Answer Man." See this link for more info: http://www.freegoodnews.com/greed-in-church.htm. This is why you won't hear prominent Christian ministries teaching about greed-- far too many of them have been disqualified because of their own greed.Yes, don't worry about me becoming too "judgmental." Worry instead about the church being too much like the Laodecian church judged by Jesus in Rev. 3:14-22 .

Investing in me. Some people have donated financially... thank you much! Even though it's not much, I take it as a vote of confidence. I feel that these investments are made personally in me... not some 'general gift' for some 'general good'... So far, all work is done totally by volunteers (zero salaries or pay). In fact, I'm by far the biggest contributor. Hopefully things will take-off next year when I have programs on oneplace.com . For now, I'm building-up the portfolio of (free) products.

Hi friends-

The Halloween Show. I felt this show went really good. I arrived at the studio early, so I wasn't rushed, as I've been with the other two tapings. I explained the origins of Halloween, and discussed the issue of whether Christians should participate, along with sharing some relevent Old Testament and New Testament verses. I had a brief chance to also go over some basics of the gospel. Re-run times are posted on the web, as well as free articles about Halloween (origins, and the Christian response).

Next Show: Greed. I'm changing the topic for my next show, on Oct. 20th. It will be part 1 of "Greed in the Church." I'm going to talk about the epidemic we have of Televangelists and greed. I'll be covering the top problems and some of the excuses that are given for tolerating it. This is something that I'm feeling as a very strong conviction... long overdue for some judgment... This may be controversial, but I'm really getting passionate about it. We need to straighten this out amongst ourselves, so Jesus doesn't have to "clear the Temple" again...

Hi friends-

Islam Show. Talk about weakness (see verse above)... Someone asked me how the show went. I gave it a 'D' grade; not for what it was, but what it could have been if I wasn't doing this as a part-time project. I'm learning I still need to scale back my expectations until I can do this full-time. This Scripture is encouraging for me-- the weaker I am, the more God is glorified... the more I realize I need God's help to carry out His work... Re-run dates and channels are posted on the web. We did one show, and two others that will be played later.

Financial Update. On the good side, my TV expenses for Oct.-Dec. are turning out to be less expensive than I forecasted, by a few hundred dollars (a misunderstanding of sorts). I think too many media ministries are corrupted with greed, so I posted my financials online, and hope to have the integrity to continue this practice as the ministry grows.

LDS Connection. I re-established contact with a representative of the LDS (Mormon) Church, and I look forward to doing another show with him. I did this a year or two ago. At that time, I gave him about five of my top concerns about the LDS church, in terms of theology, history, archeology, etc., and let him respond to each.Halloween. Should be an interesting show. Be warned, if you are not a Muslim it is very easy to fall into the trap of interpreting what is said as an answer in the wrong way. The classic is asking a Muslim if they believe that killing of innocent men women and children is wrong or not. Where you do get an answer, it is usually in the form of "of course it is wrong to kill innocents" - SOUNDS GREAT. The catch is to recognise that our definitions of "INNOCENT" may not be the same. Muslims in such a context are INNOCENT - infidels (all none Muslims) apparently are NOT innocent. I would like to see questions in the form of "what they see as the intention or aims of Islam in western culture / secular acceptance of all religions on an EQUAL basis / their role and aims in western government / etc.More particularly extracting admissions of agendas to have Islam / Koran / Sharia Law introduced into western democracies. A statement attributed to an Islam spokesperson in USA went along the lines of "Islam ? - we are not here to be the equal of other religions - we are here to be the dominant religion". Thats off the top of my head - I'm sure others will expand on this theme. Thank you for the opportunity to make suggestions.

And the tree and rock will say: oh Muslim, oh servant of Allah, there is a Jew behind me, come and kill him!" The reference to monkeys and pigs is from a story in the Quran that claims Jews were cursed by Allah and turned into monkeys and pigs.

Moral of the story is after the joke:Warning: Pun AheadSome friars needed to raise more money for books for the school, so they opened up a small florist shop to raise funds. Since everyone liked to buy flowers from the men of God, a rival florist across town thought the competition was unfair. He asked the good brothers to close down, but they would not. He went back and begged the friars to close. They ignored him.So, the rival florist hired Hugh MacTaggart, the roughest and most vicious thug in town to "persuade" them to close. Hugh beat up the friars and trashed their store, saying he'd be back if they didn't close up shop. Terrified, they did so, thereby proving that "Only Hugh can prevent florist friars."

Hi friends-

TBN (Trinity Broadcasting Network) Update. I saw their federal form 990 for TBN. Guess how much Jan & Paul make... ready for this... a combined total of $764,000 (Paul is at $403K, and Jan is at $361K). I'll provide more about this later. What a shame, but I guess it shouldn't be surprising, given their "prosperity teaching." What's a reasonable salary? Even they know, because it is what they pay those under them; the others have decent salaries. If you ever hear them cryng about needing money to keep the Gospel on TV, remember thier salary. There is a place for righteous anger, and this is it, since they are doing this in the name of God and in the name of Christianity, yet it is directly opposed to our Lord's teaching... and what does this say about being "nonprofit?"

Financial update. If you want to see my year-to-date finances, they are posted on the web under the "how to support us" tab. Only $1500 in the red, and no salaries yet...

Hi friends-

TV schedule playback for Portland Westside. The first three shows (about the Israeli/Palestinian crisis) that we taped a few weeks back are now playing in the Portland west-side. In November, these will be edited/polished, and shown in the Portland, Gresham, and Vancouver areas.

TBN Info. I'm doing a little investigation on other ministries to see how their finances are. Something interesting... I asked TBN (Trinity Broadcasting Network) for their Form 990. They replied that they are behind schedule and still working on it for the year ending Dec. 2003. Boy, that sounds like a serious problem to me. I can't imagine a large organization like that, pulling in millions of dollars, and they are still trying to get their 2003 taxes done! Sounds like a major malfunction to me... Anyway, I'll ask them to send me what they have, for 2002 if necessary... this should be interesting (nonprofits need to provide their federal tax form 990 to the public upon request by law).

Webcasting. I will be putting my TV shows on the internet for free downloading and viewing with oneplace.com . This will start probably around early Dec. 2004 (just a few months). It's going to cost in the neighborhood of $300 per month, so I need to get some supporters.

Financial update. Since I'm in the start-up phase, I running in the red (I'm personally financing this ministry in the hopes that it will take hold). My goal is to make my finances known on the web monthly. See the "how to support us" tab on the main page for this info (I hope to post it soon, not there yet).

Future topics. Oct. is the month to discuss the role of women in the Church... a hot topic (I think the church needs to empower women a lot more). Nov. is the month to talk about tithing (too many churches have it wrong... it's not the rule for today's church). Dec. is the month to talk about "Secular Humanism," the belief system that includes the belief that there is no God, or if there is, He and it are irrelevant.

Looking for callers. I just scheduled a special show for Sept. 29th, 8-8:30 pm, LIVE in the Portland area on cable channel 11. It will be "all about Islam," with my guest and friend Mohammad Rahman (a practicing Muslim and Quran Study Leader). I'm looking for people who would like to call-in and ask questions... interested? Exciting News: tax exemption recognition request is submitted. The most exciting news: I've completed the request form for recognition of tax exempt status from the Federal government. (Since my last email, I've received confirmation from the state that FreeGoodNews.com is now an Oregon Corporation). Now, if anyone donates to this ministry, it will be tax deductible when I get formal recognition (it is retroactive). Click here for more info on how to give by check or credit card if you want to help me (this link also contains corporate income/expenses and budgets-- my books are totally open). You can also see all the tax forms I had to submit. This is a big achievement, and the hardest part of the paperwork for creating a 501(c)(3) corporation. It's also the most expensive; the application fee was $500. Fortunately, it's a one-time payment.For those who don't know me too well, I have a full-time job, and my hope is that this ministry will grow to the extent that I can enter it full-time. After looking at my proposed budget, it looks to me like it may be a few years. Where I work now, I can get early retirement in 7 years, so that will likely be the plan. If the ministry grows much faster than I project, I can leave anytime earlier... and I'm mentally ready for it...

Free Book. Don't forget, if you want to get a free book about the inside story about how Christians are trying to live/work/minister in the Israeli occupied territories (Gaza and West Bank), click here for info on how to get it. I strongly recommend it. It really shows how the power of the Gospel can be a bright light and hope for a depressed and angry situation. Tell your Christian friends about this. It's so critical that as Christians, we take a stand for Christ-like and holy living, rather than trying to fulfill endtime theologies, especially in ways that are contrary to Christ's standard (killing and fighting for land). Some Christians feel that Israel, as God's people, can do no wrong, and refuse to see the situation from a balanced perspective. After reading this book, I feel that it is in the center of God's heart.

Webcasting. I will webcast the previous shows when I get some content built-up for a weekly rotation. I also need to edit/polish the shows before they can be webcast. I'm praying for a volunteer editor to come forward (I have a few people in mind). This will cost me about $300 per month, just for showing on the web. I also project the TV production costs to be about $240 per month (for 6 30-min. episodes). Each episode gets played about 4 -6 times in the westside of Portland. I will submit some of them for replay also in Gresham, downtown Portland, and Vancouver WA. Air-time on cable is totally free; costs are for the tape and studio time. The tapes are $15 each, and the studio that I use is only $25 per 30 minutes.How do I plan to finance this? So far, it's primarily by myself. For now, I have a relatively high paying technical secular job to bootstrap this project. I have already received a few donations, so that's a good vote of confidence, and much appreciated!

Future Topics. I will soon start having a bi-weekly time slot in the Portland area. I'll be looking for interesting people and topics... any ideas? Let me know what interests you. What are the issues you really care about, and churches are afraid to address? What topics would you like to learn more about? What topic would make you think "Wow- I really need to watch that show!"

Remarks about or first (3) TV shows. Yesterday Doug and I were in the TV studio and we taped (3) 1/2 hr. shows about the crisis in Israel (Israel vs. Palestinians). The tapes have been submitted for playback in Portland Oregon, and I'll let you know the schedule as soon as I get it. We are not on the side of the Israeli's or Palestinians, but on the side for God and peace (although it seems that Israel needs to back-off from their current terrorizing/occupying "crack downs"). There are groups working for peace and understanding between Israeli's and Palestinians, but it all comes to a grinding halt with Israel's incursions, curfews, etc. in the occupied territories and how they choke-off travel with "check-points".On each show, we had some scripture to bring to bear on the situation. The ultimate solution is to get everyone "in Christ." Barring that, the next best thing is teaching them love and forgiveness, trying to battle the urge for revenge and hate. A slanderous ex-Christian website alert. On an unrelated note, I visited a website for "ex-Christians." After posting a few messages, they banned my computer from access, then modified my messages to make me look dumb, narcissistic, and hate-filled. Hi-

In the past (and plan for the future, too) I've done hows from an Evangelical Christian position, on topics such as Islam, Mormonism, Roman Catholicism, Evolution, recovery from homosexuality, etc. With shows on topics such as Islam, I try to clearly portray our common ground as well as differences. One of the first topics I'm currently working on has to do with the Israeli/Palestinian crisis in Israel, stemming from the Zionism program. What is the problem? What is the solution? What does religion have to do with it? It's a very sad situation, especially if you're a Palestinian in the occupied territories (some are Muslim's, some are Christians, and some are non-religious).

Before reading this, I had no idea of the existence of Palestinian Christians, and how that area is losing them due to the Israeli oppression. Truly, there is violent and criminal behavior on both sides, just like a gang feud in New York, only on a grander scale with more sophisticated weapons. Anyway, it's been an eye-opening study. My first TV guest on this subject is Doug Wilbanks, a Christian at my Church, Beaverton Christian Church. He has been active in peace demonstrations and has visited Israel, and he's been trying to bring awareness of all the human misery from there. America is in a position to do something, and we can do something if we wanted to.I could write much more, but that's all for this intro message.
